Abstract

"One of the slogans of the reformation was ecclesia reformata semper reformanda - 'the reformed church always reforming'. Churches throughout the western world are currently engaged in reform and renewal programmes through internal structural reforms as well as movements like 'emerging church'. This book presents a challenging theology of church reform and renewal that offers a contemporary understanding of this historic slogan. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, Bradbury discerns processes and practices which are perpetually reforming and renewing the identity of the church. It examines doctrinal and confessional conceptions of the church, re-examines texts concerned with covenantal renewal and explores Jewish-Christian dialogue as an example of renewal. A constructive theology is offered utilizing the categories of collective memory and mimetic practice. This upholds fundamental Christian identity, whilst driving the process of reform and renewal under God in the context of a three-way relationship between God, the church and the world."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Abstract

"This monograph examines the nature of the earliest Christian meeting places, with a special emphasis on the formation of sacred space. The use of domestic spaces by these early groups is widely accepted, but the spaces themselves are usually understood as having been neutral, rather than sacred. In this study, I propose not only that these domestic spaces were considered sacred space by the Christian communities that used them, but that they were also complex ritual loci in their own right. Mapping what is known from early Christian texts onto the archaeological data for Roman domestic space here provides a new lens through which to examine the relationship between early Christians and their meeting space. In many cases, this meeting space would have included the presence of the Roman domestic cult. Despite the fact that the domestic cult was a polytheistic one, at odds with monotheistic Christianity, I assert that its practices likely continued in those places used for worship by the Christians. I also argue that continued practice of the domestic cult in Roman domestic spaces did not preclude the house-church Christians from understanding their rituals or their meeting places as sacred. Theories of sacred space and ritual practice are engaged to demonstrate that the house-church Christians constructed temporary sacred space through ritual enactment. The exploration of meeting places as both inhabited and sacred space raises a host of questions about early Christian identity, ritual affiliation, and domestic practice."--

Abstract

Ecclesiology is the study of the church and has two focal points; the one is the historical and doctrinal perspective on the church, and the other is the church as situated in a local context in the sense of the local practices of actual congregations. The ecclesiology or, more correctly, the ecclesiologies of this volume mainly focuses on the second aspect, i.e., understanding the local congregation or parish as a community of believers. A congregation may firstly be described by posing a theological question: What is the local missional church or congregation all about? This question may be answered from different perspectives, but it remains essential to answer it from a theological perspective. The first five chapters in this book focus mainly on a theological understanding of the congregation. This is done from different disciplines within the study field of theology. Congregations are, secondly, social realities and should be described and analysed through an analytical or empirical lens, or, to answer the question attached to the first empirical-descriptive task of practical theology, “What is going on?”. The remaining chapters use a quantitative and qualitative lens and give an empirical analysis of the congregation. The intention is to critically reflect on the church and congregations’ ecclesiology from a theological and analytical perspective with an emphasis on the South African context. It wants to map markers for the development of contemporary ecclesiologies, and the different chapters are meant as mirrors to look in and reflect on the theological and contextual relevance of denominations and congregations in South Africa.

Abstract

There has been substantial church growth in Britain between 1980 and 2010. This is the controversial conclusion from the international team of scholars, who have drawn on interdisciplinary studies and the latest research from across the UK. Such church growth is seen to be on a large scale, is multi-ethnic and can be found across a wide range of social and geographical contexts. It is happening inside mainline denominations but especially in specific regions such as London, in newer churches and amongst ethnic minorities. Church Growth in Britain provides a forceful critique of the notion of s

Abstract

In this insightful text, Stan Chu Ilo addresses key questions that face modern Catholicism, particularly in Africa. He shows how two key themes of Pope Francis—the church of the poor and the church of mercy—have deep roots in biblical, patristic, and diverse ecclesial traditions. In Ilo’s focus on Africa, he offers a “Triple A ecclesiology” of accountability, accompaniment, and action guided by some of the practices and theological aesthetics of Pope Francis. The result is a road map and guide for the mission of God in history beyond the papacy of Pope Francis.
